Bricklaying Contractor for Stoke-on-Trent & the Potteries
Stoke-on-Trent is a city built on clay and brick. The bottle kilns, terraces and former pottery works of the six towns still shape its streets, and much of today's development is taking place on land those industries left behind. For housebuilders, main contractors and groundworkers working in the Potteries, Vanguard Masonry is a bricklaying contractor that is close by, properly resourced and used to the realities of brownfield sites.
Our office in Dunston, Stafford is a straight run up the M6 and onto the A500, so Stoke sites are well within easy reach of our base. Our supervisors and gangs get there without the long daily journey a contractor from further afield would face.
Areas we cover around Stoke
We work across all six towns, Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton, and the surrounding area:
| Area | Typical scheme types in the area |
|---|---|
| Newcastle-under-Lyme & Keele | New-build housing, student and education buildings |
| Kidsgrove & Talke | Housing phases, industrial units along the A500 |
| Stone & Barlaston | Edge-of-town housing developments |
| Trentham & Blythe Bridge | Residential and care schemes |
| Cheadle & the Staffordshire Moorlands | Smaller housing sites and rural commercial work |
| Crewe & south Cheshire | Housing and commercial schemes over the county line |
Brownfield sites need a disciplined substructure gang
Regeneration sites in Stoke often come with old foundations, variable ground and tight access between existing buildings. That puts pressure on the substructure. Footings can change from plot to plot, and the groundworker needs a bricklaying subcontractor who can follow them without holding up the oversite.
Our substructure gangs work directly for groundworkers, building foundation brickwork and blockwork up to DPC and keeping pace with the groundworks programme. We plan labour around the plots being released rather than a fixed headcount, so the gang matches the work available each week. In the city we’ve delivered substructure brickwork at Oak-N-Gate, Stoke-on-Trent, working for the groundworks package on a new-build housing scheme.
Superstructure brickwork for housebuilders and main contractors
Once the slab is down we can take the superstructure through to completion. That covers facing brickwork, blockwork and cavity construction for private and affordable housing, and brickwork for care homes, schools and SEND facilities, offices and commercial buildings. Every package has a named supervisor and a daily site log, and quality checks are recorded so your site team and warranty inspector can see what has been signed off.
We set out and gauge carefully so elevations line through from plot to plot and phase to phase. We also coordinate closely with scaffold and following trades to keep finished brickwork clean.
Brick country
North Staffordshire has a long history of brickmaking, and red facing brick is part of the character of the city. That matters on new housing schemes, where planners often want new streets to sit comfortably alongside existing ones. Our gangs blend bricks from several packs as they lay to avoid banding, keep mortar colour consistent across a phase and build sample panels to the approved specification before production starts.
Care, education and commercial work in the city
Not all of our Stoke work is housing. The city and Newcastle-under-Lyme have a steady flow of care home, school and SEND projects, along with commercial and industrial units along the A500 and the M6 corridor. On these schemes a main contractor usually wants a single brickwork package, a consistent gang and a supervisor who attends progress meetings. We deliver brickwork for these buildings to the project specification, with RAMS, inductions and reporting set up to suit the main contractor’s systems. Elsewhere we’ve completed care home brickwork such as Acer Lodge in Blackburn. See our projects page. Why Stoke contractors appoint Vanguard

Testimonials
On our care home development, Vanguard took ownership of the stonework scope from day one. The finish quality was excellent, their supervision was solid, and they kept communication simple and professional throughout. They understood the importance of programme and quality needed, and they delivered exactly what we needed with minimal snagging. I’d recommend them to any developer looking for a dependable sub contractor.
